Open it, sell it, or hold it? Deciding what to do with Pokémon sealed

You queued, you got the boxes, and now they are on the floor of your room. Every one of them has three futures: you open it, you sell it now, or you put it away and sell it later. Most people pick by feel. There is a simpler way.

1. What would it sell for today?

Start with what the same product has actually sold for in the last few weeks, in your country. Not the asking price, not what someone in a group chat said. If you bought at the shop price and it already sells for more, you have a profit you can take today.

2. What would you get from opening it?

This is pack EV: the average value of the cards in a pack, divided by what the pack costs. Above 1 and opening beats selling sealed, on average. Below 1 and it does not.

For most modern sets it is well below 1. Double Holo's 17 October brief put White Flare at 0.52x: on average you get back about half. Some people get the chase card. Most people do not.

So unless you are opening for fun, or you are after one card for yourself, a box worth more sealed should stay sealed.

3. What does holding cost?

Holding is not free. The money is tied up and cannot go into the next drop. You need somewhere dry and flat to keep it. And not everything goes up: in October 2026, booster boxes from this year's main sets, such as Perfect Order and Chaos Rising, sell under what the shop charged, according to TCG Drop Radar. Older ETBs like Crown Zenith and Obsidian Flames sell for five or six times their shop price.

The products that grew tended to be from sets people loved, out of print, and not reprinted. If what you are holding has none of those, selling now and buying the next drop is often the better use of the money.

A simple rule

  • Worth well over retail now, and the set is still in print: sell some, keep some.
  • Worth under retail: do not sell at a loss in a panic, but do not buy more of it either.
  • Pack EV under 1: do not open it to make money.
  • Out of print and from a set people want: this is the stuff that has held.

Keep the numbers straight

Whatever you choose, keep the cost. When you sell, your profit is the sale minus what you paid, minus fees and postage. When you hold, the only honest number is what it would sell for today against what you paid.

Trackerly keeps both. Orders you bought go to Inventory, and anything you decide to hold can move to Investments in one click, where it is valued every day from real sales. When you sell, Move to Sales records the sale and the profit, and it is never counted twice.
